2020 at RG Group Construction, Fit Out and Refurbishment Company: It wasn’t all doom and gloom.

It’s fair to say 2020 wasn’t the best year. The entire planet was locked inside and everything from business to pleasure stopped indefinitely, but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t some good in those fateful 12 months. At RG Group we completed some incredible projects for some incredible clients, so we thought we would take a walk down memory lane looking at some of the great work we completed in 2020.

Fit Out Construction: Zara, Bluewater

As the main contractor of Zara’s extension of their Bluewater retail unit, our retail construction team worked tirelessly to ensure the project got completed despite the pandemic trying to hold us back. We coordinated around isolations and site shutdowns, it was also important to not affect deliveries and traffic to any of the neighbouring stores (when they were allowed to open). In the end this was a wonderful project and turned out beautifully.

Construction and Fit Out: Sainsbury’s, Brackley

Supermarkets have truly been the stars of 2020, they have been the only place most of us have been able to go this year, so it was a true honour for RG Group to be appointed the main contractor for the construction of a new 36,500 sq ft Sainsbury’s in Northamptonshire. The project scope also included a car park and a new access route for the service yard. We are very happy with the finished product, and plenty of space for social distancing in the aisles…

Design and Build: Bricks Capital, London City Airport

We may not have been jetting off overseas in 2020 quite as much as we may have liked, but at RG Group our team were heading to the airport. RG Group undertook the design and build of a 184 bedroom hotel for Marriott. The project was 7 floors, with a bar, gym and meeting rooms all of which were ready to be used post-pandemic! The main structure was a steel frame and the exterior of the building is beautiful traditional masonry with natural stone recessed window bays.

Construction Project: Olympian Homes. Lamb Street, Coventry

The Weaver Place development comprises of 823 student accommodation bedrooms for Olympian Homes as developer, and IQ Student Accommodation as building operator. The project consisted of three main towers of 20, 11 & 10 stories with the lower and ground floor linking the towers. The central atrium has a reception area, shared communal areas such as a Gym, games room, large lounge and study areas. The main structure of the buildings uses a reinforced concrete frame, the ground works and foundations comprised of 410 rotary bored piles up to 15m in depth and included the bridging of a significant sewer that crossed the site with a 2m deep transfer structure.

Under the Considerate Constrictors Scheme the project achieved a score of 45.

Design and Fit Out: Newcastle Racing & Events, Newcastle Racecourse

Attending live sport events was a highlight of 2020, right? Well maybe not, but attending a sports ground was a highlight for RG Group. The Newcastle Racecourse Tattersall Bar was a full strip out of a large commercial area and refurbishment of existing areas as well as new elements such as betting shops formed on the ground floor of the Newcastle race course grandstand. This project was a full design and build including a full M+E design. The initial strip out included floor and ceiling asbestos removal; we didn’t want anymore people getting ill than was necessary. The fit out included a stunning refurbishment of 2 existing bars, toilets and kitchens. We then created fantastic new areas which included a betting shop area, a chip shop and a café. Race day events were considered and programmed within the working phases allowing for undisturbed racing events during the project.

Build and Fit Out: Unite Students. White Rose View, Leeds

Going to university is an exciting time in many young people’s lives, especially if you are moving into student accommodation built by RG Group. This fantastic project included 976 fully fitted en-suite bedrooms across 2 towers and communal space that includes a cinema, karaoke room, games area, study spaces and a communal kitchen diner. In this project we replaced the old with the new and demolished 2 existing buildings. One building is 17 storeys and the other is 27, the 17 storey building has commercial space and the basement car park has been re-established for use by the neighbouring office building.

Refurbishment and Fit Out: Morrisons. Manchester, Piccadilly Gardens

Supermarkets are a staple of life in the UK pandemic or not, they have revolutionised the way we do our grocery shopping. Morrisons have broken the mould yet again with help from us at RG Group to create a brand new store with a Market Kitchen format. This new Market Kitchen format offers separate ‘food-to-go’ stalls with stir fries, pizzas, burgers, smoothies and sandwich/wrap options, in addition to its grocery aisles. Th e project involved a strip out of the existing store, including the basement and refit the entire unit.  The works included new basement drainage, forming new structural openings in the existing slab and external walls, the installation of all M, E and R, new flooring, counter bulkheads, food preparation areas with servery counters, new back of house areas/cold stores and new shop fittings including refrigerated cabinets.
