The project comprised of the construction of a 13 storey student accommodation building. To the east of the building the height varies from 8 & 10 storeys. To the west, the height varies from 9, 10 & 13 storeys. The 13,000m2 structure provides a total of 485 studios and bedroom spaces, accompanied by communal spaces and also includes 704m2 commercial floorspace (for use within Class A1, A2, A3 or B1) on part of the ground floor.
The project required demolition and clearance of the existing buildings. The new structure adjoins the ‘Margaret Rule Hall’ accommodation building (also constructed by RG Group under a previous contract) which required the construction of a temporary entrance and reception area to facilitate the new build.
The new building is a Reinforced concrete frame with a mix of brick and cladded external elevations. Mast climbers and cradles provided access and protection as the works progressed vertically. Internally offsite constructed pods were utilised for bathrooms, kitchens, bedrooms and common rooms. External S278 works, subway infilling, hard landscaping, drainage and new cycle parking tied the project into its surroundings.
