The Sainsbury’s Hayes scheme was to construct a new two storey side extension including an atrium structure, ground floor front extension and back of house extension as well as the complete refurbishment of the existing trading sales floor. The works increase the existing sales area from 40,000 sq ft to 83,500 sq ft.
The new extensions were constructed in steel frame with a metal deck and concrete first floor to the side extension.
The foundation system comprised of ground bearing pads and interconnecting ground beams.
Public access was maintained to the existing store, and the store was able to operate with little disruption. Temporary deli’s, meat and fish counter and bakery were required when undertaking the construction of the new offers.
The new escalators were located on the existing building line, therefore meaning that the existing row of steel framed columns required removing.
