Ikea Ashton was one of the few none standard Ikea layouts developed in the world at the time of construction. It’s hybrid layout was a concept developed to suit the specific needs of the site and the planning regulations in the area. The project team developed the concept on a very short time scale to meet the clients requirements of opening the store within a 10 month turn around from purchase. Whilst also delivering the cheapest Ikea in the UK to date.
The store consisted of an elevated car park and large ramp facilities to compensate for the lack of ground level parking. The access ramp was designed using bridge technology and large installation equipment. All the excess load from this additional structure lead to large foundation requirements, in the form of 450mm and 600mm CFA piling.
Associated works to the store were sheet piling to the existing highway and local railway bridge structures.
