RG Group Gilltown Chichester

RG Group were appointed as main contractor to construct 2no student accommodation blocks, providing 134no beds over 4,290m2 for the University of Chichester. The original design was value engineered to a traditional build structure, through early negotiated budgetary review. The buildings include, bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, common areas, gym space, TV lounges, study rooms, laundry’s and bin stores.

Substructure required piled foundations with ground beams and a ground bearing slab.

The superstructure was built with loadbearing blockwork walls, pre cast planks and steel beams to form the internal floors. Internally, the building incorporated modular bathroom pods with the full building fit out included within the scope of the contract. Crane lifts were undertaken in planned agreement with Network Rail in light of the proximity to the adjacent live railway.

Brickwork formed the elevations, accompanied by cladding and uPVC windows. Roofing works consisted of a mixture of single ply membrane and pitched tiled roofing systems.

External works consisted of drainage, soft landscaping, new carpark area, new S278 bellmouth highway entrance, tarmac surfacing, line marking and fencing.

The project was completed on time, within the clients budgetary plans.

The project was BREEAM assessed, achieving ‘Very Good’. Furthermore the project scored ‘Excellent’ (41/50) under the
Considerate Constructors Scheme.
