Types of jobs you can get in construction

The construction sector is a very varied place and there are many different roles available within it. From new builds to renovation, working on jobs involving the built environment or projects that are for specific sectors, such as healthcare or education, there are so many different options. Each of these projects requires an entire team of people, each of whom has something different to add to the process. These are just some of the jobs that you can get in construction.

  • Architect. If you’re keen to be involved in designing the structure of buildings then an architecture role will be ideal for you. It’s worth noting that, when it comes to the technical aspects of design work, this is often handled by architectural technologists, who have a more niche skillset.
  • Civil, structural or geotechnical engineer. All these roles have a responsibility for ensuring that the designs of the building will actually work in practice. However, each also has a very specific skill set – for example, structural engineers focus on ensuring that the inner framework of the project is robust while geotechnical engineers design and oversee foundations.
  • Surveyor. This job involves giving technical advice about properties and construction. Building surveyors are probably best known for providing reports that deliver insight into the condition of a building.
  • Quantity surveyor. If you enjoy making sense of the numbers then this is the role for you, as it’s the quantity surveyor’s job to analyse how much a build will cost in theory and what the expense is going to be in reality. This is one of the most essential jobs in construction in terms of ensuring projects are viable.
  • Building service engineer. When you start to consider the interior of the building, it’s the work of a building service engineer that you’re looking at. This role involves the heating, lighting, power and ventilation of the building, as well as aspects such as cooling and water systems. Also known as a mechanical or electrical engineer, this role could mean being involved at the design stage or implementing design further down the line.
  • Landscape architect. This is a role that focuses not on buildings but on the open spaces around us, in particular how these can be improved and used to enhance the human living experience.
  • Site manager. It’s the site manager who is responsible for managing the physical location of construction and ensuring everything that needs to be is done. That includes making sure that deadlines are met when it comes to building work and that standards and budgets are being maintained.
  • Construction trades and crafts. This category covers a whole wide range of interesting jobs within construction, each one with a vital role to play in the finished project. It could be anything, from a bricklayer to a carpenter, stonemason, joiner, electrician or painter and decorator.

Construction offers something for almost everyone on the jobs front – these are just some of the roles that are available.
