Prudential London Surrey 100

On Sunday 10 August 2014 RGs Richard Bailey took part in the Prudential London – Surrey 100 cycling event. The course began in the Olympic Park in Stratford and looped through Surrey and back into London finishing on the Mall. The route is effectively a 100 mile loop, which was reduced on the day because of safety concerns caused by the weather.

Chris Boardman, who took part in the challenge, described the weather: “it started out horrific, turned biblical and then escalated to being horrendous”.

The journey around what would have been a picturesque course was hampered slightly by the remnants of hurricane Bertha that decided to travel across the Atlantic and descend on London at the precise moment Richard was riding through the West End, and didn’t really let up all day. Riding on roads that were effectively flooded on 1.5cm thick slick tyres made it very interesting!

Within 8 miles of leaving the start line Richard had to repair 2 punctures and ride the remainder of the event on a patched up inner tube praying that he didn’t get another.

Irrespective of the weather the support on the route was still in abundance and was particularly loud when spectators saw that RIchard was riding for the British Heart Foundation. The experience of riding the event was amazing and the weather was soon forgotten with the warmth from the supporters and fellow riders (some 23,500 took part in the event). The sense of achievement was only enhanced by being able to cross the line on The Mall with Buckingham Palace in the background.

Richard chose to ride for the British Heart Foundation following his Step-Father having had a heart bypass a couple of years ago. Following the care and support he received during his treatment, which has now provided him with a new lease of life, he was pleased to be able to give something back to this great cause and in all he hopes to raise in excess of £1,500.
