Here’s why to do your apprenticeship in construction

An apprenticeship is a method for obtaining training and is the ideal way to enter a sector like construction. You’ll be able to receive on the job training and also to earn a wage while you’re learning your trade. This has a lot of advantages for anyone who wants to start building a career in the construction world and is often a faster and more efficient, way to get to the job that you want. These are just some of the reasons why it makes a lot of sense to do an apprenticeship in construction.

  • You’ll finish your apprenticeship in a much better financial position. As you’ll be paid a wage while you’re training you’ll be able to fund your daily life and won’t finish the training with enormous student debt.
  • It’s an opportunity to get key practical experience. Apprenticeships revolve around hands-on learning so you’ll be on the job learning exactly what that entails, rather than sitting in a classroom and hearing about it. There are lots of benefits to this, from being able to ask questions and try things yourself to getting inspired by what the job actually involves.
  • Your skillset will be highly transferable. Construction apprenticeships can set you up to work in the industry in many different environments, whether that’s a UK building site or construction projects in other locations all over the world.
  • When you complete the apprenticeship you’re already in the industry. This means you’re more likely to have a clear idea of where you want to go next and also to have access to the connections and networks that will ensure you can make that happen.
  • It’s more than just training. When you’re doing an apprenticeship you’ll come into contact with a wide range of people from a diverse variety of backgrounds and be able to get a much broader perspective on the opportunities available to you. There will also be plenty of chances to pick up a broad spectrum of life skills and insights into people from all walks of life.
  • The training programme can be very varied. You are unlikely to be spending every day doing the same thing. In fact, most construction apprentices say that they have a huge variety to their daily lives and no two days are the same.
  • There are so many different roles available. No matter what your personality, your skills or your personality traits there will be a job in construction to suit you once your apprenticeship is complete.
  • Start at this level and there are no limits to where you can go. An apprenticeship gives you options and opens the door to building the kind of career that you want. There are plenty of examples of people who have used an apprenticeship for exactly that, such as Sir Terry Morgan CBE, who is now managing Europe’s largest civil engineering project but who started out as an apprentice.

These are just some of the reasons why an apprenticeship in construction makes a lot of sense.
