Spitalfield’s City Farm is a city farm in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, a short distance from our Middlesex Street project, currently being constructed for Unite Students. The farm was opened in 1978 on a 1.3-acre wasteland site that was a former railway goods depot. Initially an allotment site, it expanded to house animals, and became a charity in 1980.
Some of the project team have volunteered to offer some electrical, plumbing and labouring help. C&D Electrical have organised to provide armoured cable and secure safe 3 way power supplies to the animal housing, eco hut (where local children have lessons in the local wildlife and vegetation), drying room and outside meeting spaces. Some sensor lights have also been installed, instead of having lights left permanently on. We also fixed out all the leaking taps and lagged the external pipework to help with the pipes not freezing up in winter.
In addition we provided a skip and some labourers to clear out lots of rubbish and old wood. All the helpers are enjoying spending time in this rare little oasis nested in the heart of the City.
RG Project Manager Tim Radford said, “Its been and is a pleasure to do a few things to help out. The service the farm provides to the animals and local community is truly admirable and invaluable.”
