RG were appointed the Design and Build of a 17 storey student accommodation block in Bournemouth, providing 430 beds and a gross floor area of 13,763m2.
The reinforced concrete frame structure has been constructed on a piled foundation utilising a tower crane, mast climber system, scaffolding and hoists to aid vertical progression within the limited space available. Envelope works include blockwork and rendered sections with efficient Tyvek insulation and EDPM rubber roofing on the staggered roof levels. SFS framing supports windows, glazing and cladded façade finishes. Modular bathroom pods were incorporated with traditional built floor layouts and full fitout. Plant and comms rooms, a gymnasium and cycle storage formed at basement level. Social spaces were formed on ground level and a communal skylounge on level 16 accompanied by a skyview roof terrace. External works included a substation, drainage and services connections below ground. Courtyards were formed with university designed murals.
During the construction programme we undertook beach cleaning initiatives, volunteering for RSPB, provided local fire brigade access for high level training and carried out garden work for the adjacent women’s refuge.
Completed on time and within budget, the project was ‘Very Good’ BREEAM rated. Furthermore the project scored ‘Excellent’ (41/50) under the Considerate Constructors Scheme.
