What responsibilities do the clients and main contractors have when it comes to Health and Safety?
When it comes to promoting health and safety in the workplace throughout the construction industry, whose responsibility is it to ensure that standards are high? Responsibility lies within different elements of the design and build process, including the clients and main contractors.
Contractors responsible for completing different areas of the project are bound to legal requirements of health and safety in the same way as the main overseeing company is, to protect all construction workers throughout the whole process.
Legal requirements for construction contractors include The Health and Safety at Work Act of 1974 and 1999, both of which detail standards to be met in order for companies to be considered fully compliant in the way that they operate throughout the construction process from the beginning to end. This gives clients an idea of what to look for proof of when choosing a contractor to complete their project.
What is the client’s role?
Clients have a key role to play in maintaining sufficient health and safety on site wherever possible. They must choose to work with contractors who are qualified and compliant to all UK health and safety acts, and ensure that they have certification that is up-to-date.
It is the role of the client to enable optimum safety measures for those carrying out the construction work, by holding their suppliers to account to the standards required. They should be proactive at carrying out reviews of their health and safety policies and addressing any potential occupational health issues to the principle contractor where necessary.
